Spondylosis –

Overview

This is a form of spine degeneration that happens to most people as they get older. It can affect any level of your spine from your neck to your lower back. And it can lead to pain and other issues. Let’s take a moment to learn more.

Causes

First, why does it happen? Most often, it results from the normal wear and tear of aging. As we get older, our spinal discs begin to dry out. They lose their elasticity. They may thin and collapse. This puts stress on the joints and ligaments of the spine.Vertebrae may begin to shift out of position and rub together harmfully. Bony growths called “bone spurs” may form. The spinal cord and nerve roots may become pinched. This causes a wide range of issues.

Symptoms

Next, what are the symptoms? Well, your symptoms depend on the location and severity of the damage. Spondylosis can cause pain and loss of mobility in your neck and back. You may have feelings of pain, weakness and numbness that radiate to your arms or legs. You can have muscle spasms and headaches. You can have trouble walking, and problems controlling your bladder or bowels. Ask your doctor for a full list of symptoms.

Treatment

Finally, how do we treat it? You may benefit from lifestyle changes, medications and physical therapy. But if these don’t give you relief, you may need surgery to stabilize your spine and take pressure off your nerves. Your doctor will create a plan that’s right for you.
