Piriformis Injection (Fluoroscopic Method)-
Overview
This is an injection of steroid medicine into the piriformis muscle. We use this injection to find and treat piriformis syndrome. That’s a painful irritation of the sciatic nerve. It’s caused by pressure from the piriformis muscle.
Preparation
To begin, we numb the tissue of your buttock. With the help of a video x-ray device called a”fluoroscope,” we guide a needle through the numbed tissue and into the muscle. We may inject some contrast dye. That helps us make sure the needle is in the right place.
Injection
Now we inject the medicine. It treats the inflammation. It also helps with your pain.
End of procedure
When done, we bandage your skin and watch you for a brief time. Then, you can go home. Or, you may need to stay a bit longer while we see how the injection affects your pain. Follow your doctor’s care plan.
